The recent history of injury and usurpation
includes:
- An imposed amalgamation of the
former municipalities of Metropolitan Toronto against the
expressed will of 76 per cent of Toronto voters;
- The suspension of functions for
the duly elected school board, and the imposition of policies
designed to lower educational standards and opportunities
in Toronto to match those of communities elsewhere in Ontario;
The
imposition of laws that downloaded responsibilities to the
municipal taxpayer without providing adequate means to fund
those and other responsibilities;
- The plundering from Toronto of
billions of dollars in tax revenue and user fees each year
to subsidize tax cuts, program spending and infrastructure
elsewhere in a have province - extreme taxation with only
token representation;
- The denial of basic funds for the
only workable and efficient means of transporting large
numbers of people in an urban area, while forcing Torontonians
to subsidize transportation forms suitable only for rural
and new, low-density suburban areas;
- The imposition of a property tax
system that undermines the competitiveness of Toronto's
businesses;
- The imposition of a property tax
system that overcharges for municipal services those homeowners
who live in dense urban areas, while subsidizing homeowners
who live on large, relatively expensive-to-serve lots;
- The issuance of threats to pass
laws that would further impede Toronto's ability to raise
adequate tax revenue.
